Gold Futures: How They Work and What They Really Cost to Trade

Gold futures are the reference market for pricing the metal, and one of the most liquid instruments available for taking a position on it. They are also, for most retail traders, the least understood: the contract specifications, the margin mechanics and the cost of holding a position over time all behave differently from the spot gold most people trade through a broker.

This guide covers what a gold futures contract actually is, how the market works and who is in it, what it costs to hold, and how to size a position without being wiped out by the leverage. At the time of writing gold trades above 4,600 dollars an ounce, a level worth keeping in mind because every number below scales with it.

What a gold futures contract is

A gold future is a standardised contract obliging the buyer to take, and the seller to deliver, a specific quantity of gold at a set price on a future date. These contracts trade on regulated exchanges, principally COMEX, part of the CME Group in New York, which is the global reference market for precious metals futures.

The standard COMEX contract, ticker GC, represents 100 troy ounces of gold with a minimum fineness of 995. With gold above 4,600 dollars an ounce, one contract therefore controls roughly 460,000 dollars of metal. That figure alone rules the full-size contract out for most retail accounts, which is why the exchange also lists Micro Gold, ticker MGC, at 10 troy ounces, one tenth of the size, and a smaller 50-ounce contract. For anyone starting out, the micro contract is the realistic instrument.

Prices are quoted in US dollars and cents per troy ounce. The minimum price movement on the full contract is 10 cents an ounce, which is 10 dollars per contract, so a one-dollar move in the gold price is worth 100 dollars on a GC and 10 dollars on an MGC. Those two numbers are the whole arithmetic of the instrument and everything else follows from them.

The most liquid expiries follow the traditional cycle of February, April, June, August, October and December. Contracts exist for every month, but liquidity thins out on the more distant ones. The front month, the nearest expiry, is generally the most liquid and the one used for short-term trading.

Futures against physical gold and against CFDs

Physical gold requires secure storage, insurance and wide dealing spreads; futures give exposure to the price without any of that. Transaction costs are a fraction of the physical market, typically a few dollars per contract round turn against spreads of several per cent in retail physical gold.

Against a CFD on spot gold, the differences are subtler but they matter: a future has a fixed expiry and must be rolled, its price is set on a central exchange rather than by your counterparty, and clearing removes counterparty risk. A CFD has no expiry and can be traded in much smaller size, but you are exposed to the broker and to financing charged daily. Our comparison of futures against CFDs sets out the trade-offs in full.

Settlement and rolling

Most futures traders have no intention of taking delivery. Positions are closed or rolled to the next contract before expiry, and only a small percentage of contracts end in physical delivery, which happens through warehouse receipts for metal held in exchange-approved vaults.

Rolling is how continuous exposure is maintained: you close the expiring contract and simultaneously open the equivalent position in the next one, usually in the week before First Notice Day, when the delivery period begins. Rolling is not free, and the cost of it is the single most underestimated aspect of holding gold futures for any length of time.

How the market works and who is in it

Four groups meet in this market, and they want opposite things.

Miners use futures to lock in the selling price of future production. A mine expecting 10,000 ounces over the next six months can sell 100 contracts to fix today's price, protecting itself against a fall. Lenders often require this kind of hedging.

Jewellers and industrial users do the reverse, buying futures to fix input costs. A large jeweller who knows it must buy gold for Christmas production can buy in summer and stabilise its margins.

Speculators, from hedge funds to individuals, have no interest in the metal itself and provide the liquidity that lets the first two groups hedge at all. Their aggregate positioning is published weekly in the COT report, which is one of the few genuinely useful public windows into who is on which side.

Central banks occasionally use the market when managing reserves, though they generally prefer over-the-counter transactions for size. Their buying and selling shapes sentiment well beyond the volumes involved.

Hours and the shape of the day

The electronic session on CME Globex opens Sunday evening at 18:00 New York time and runs to Friday at 17:00, with a one-hour daily break from 17:00 to 18:00. That near-continuous schedule matters because gold reacts to events wherever they happen.

The sessions have distinct characters. The Asian hours see participation from Shanghai and Tokyo, with moderate volume but meaningful moves around Chinese data. The European hours bring a step up in liquidity when London opens, and the LBMA Gold Price benchmark, set twice daily in London, still anchors a great deal of physical pricing. The American session is the most liquid, particularly where it overlaps with Europe and around US data.

The volatility clusters are predictable: US inflation and employment releases in the morning, Federal Reserve decisions in the afternoon, and geopolitical shocks at any hour at all.

Margin: the part that surprises people

Futures work on a margin system that guarantees the financial integrity of the market. Initial margin is the deposit required to open a position, and maintenance margin is the minimum that must remain in the account. Both are set by the exchange as a function of the contract's volatility, not as a fixed percentage, and both rise when markets get turbulent, which is precisely when traders can least afford it. As a rough order of magnitude, initial margin on a gold contract sits in the mid single digits as a percentage of notional value, but the exchange changes it without asking anyone's permission.

Positions are marked to market daily. Every evening they are revalued at the settlement price and the profit or loss is credited or debited to the account. If the balance falls below maintenance margin, a margin call requires additional funds by the following day or the position is closed out. That mechanism, not the price move itself, is what actually ends most over-leveraged futures accounts.

What gold futures are good for

The first advantage is capital efficiency. Margin of a few per cent of notional means a small deposit controls a large exposure. That is genuinely useful for a hedger and genuinely dangerous for a speculator, and the arithmetic is symmetrical: at roughly twenty to one, a one per cent move in gold is a twenty per cent move on the margin posted, in either direction.

The second is liquidity. Volumes run into the hundreds of thousands of contracts a day on the front month, and beyond a million on the busiest days. Bid-ask spreads during active hours are typically a tick or two, which on a contract of this size is a rounding error compared with the several per cent spread on retail physical gold.

The third is symmetry. Going short is exactly as easy as going long, with no borrowing, no locate and no extra cost, which is not true of shares. That symmetry is what makes gold futures a practical hedge for an equity portfolio, a use case our guide to portfolio hedging explores in detail.

The fourth is transparency. The market is regulated by the CFTC in the United States and centrally cleared through CME Clearing, which removes counterparty risk. Prices, volume and open interest are public, and there is no dealing desk on the other side of your order deciding what you get filled at.

What they cost, and where accounts die

Leverage risk comes first, and it is not subtle. With margin at roughly five per cent of notional, an adverse five per cent move in gold wipes out the initial margin on a fully margined position. Gold has moved five per cent in a week many times. The temptation to use all the leverage available is constant, and resisting it is most of the job: professionals rarely run more than a fraction of the exposure their capital would technically permit.

Gap risk is the second. When the market reopens after the weekend, or after a major announcement, it can open a long way from where it closed. A stop loss is an instruction to trade at the market once a level is touched, not a guarantee of price, so in a gap it executes wherever the market is, which can be far worse than the level you set.

Roll cost is the third, and it is the one that quietly erodes long-term positions. The gold futures curve is normally in contango, meaning more distant contracts trade above nearer ones, because holding metal costs storage, insurance and, above all, foregone interest. Each time you roll a long position forward in a contango market you sell the cheaper expiring contract and buy the more expensive next one, paying the difference. Over a year that drag is broadly comparable to short-term interest rates, which in a high-rate environment is a serious headwind for anyone using futures as a buy-and-hold substitute for bullion. In the rarer periods of backwardation, when nearer contracts trade above later ones, the roll works in a long's favour instead.

Sizing a position so it survives

The rule is unchanged from any other market: risk a fixed small percentage of capital per trade, typically one to two per cent. What changes with futures is that the contract size, not your intention, decides whether that is even possible.

The arithmetic is simple. Number of contracts equals capital multiplied by the risk percentage, divided by the stop distance in dollars multiplied by the value per dollar of movement. Take a 50,000 dollar account risking one per cent, so 500 dollars, and a stop 30 dollars away from entry, which at current gold volatility is not a wide stop. On the full GC contract, where a one-dollar move is worth 100 dollars, the stop is worth 3,000 dollars: the formula returns 0.17 contracts, which does not exist. On the Micro contract at 10 dollars per point, the same stop is worth 300 dollars and the answer is 1.7 contracts, so one micro contract with room to spare.

That single calculation is why most retail traders who approach gold through the full-size contract are over-leveraged from their very first trade, whatever they intended. If the position size the formula returns is below one contract, the honest conclusion is that the instrument is too large for the account, not that the rule should be bent.

Sizing the stop itself is best done from volatility rather than from a round number. The Average True Range gives the instrument's normal daily movement, and a stop at one and a half to two ATR gives a position room to breathe without letting the loss run. Two further habits do most of the remaining work. Keep margin utilisation well below the available maximum, so that ordinary volatility cannot trigger a forced liquidation. And reduce exposure ahead of scheduled events and into the weekend, when the gap risk is asymmetric and unmanageable.

What actually moves the gold price

Gold has no cash flows, no earnings and no coupon, so it cannot be valued the way a bond or a share can. What it responds to is a short list of macro forces.

Real interest rates are the most reliable of them. Gold pays nothing to hold, so when inflation-adjusted yields rise, the opportunity cost of holding metal rises with them and gold tends to struggle; when real yields fall, the reverse. Much of gold's behaviour around central bank decisions is this relationship being repriced in real time.

The dollar matters because gold is priced in it: a stronger dollar mechanically makes gold more expensive in every other currency, damping demand. The relationship is not rigid, and it breaks down during crises when both rise together, but it holds often enough to be worth tracking. Risk appetite is the third force. Gold is a refuge asset, and flights to quality can move it violently in a matter of hours. This is exactly the behaviour that makes it useful as a portfolio hedge and dangerous as a leveraged position held through an unexpected headline.

Central bank buying and physical demand from jewellery and industry form the slower background. They rarely drive a single session but they shape the multi-year trend, and central bank accumulation has been a significant part of the story in recent years. A note on tax and jurisdiction

The tax treatment of futures varies substantially by country and it is one of the few areas where general articles are actively misleading. In the United States, for example, regulated futures contracts fall under a specific section of the tax code with a blended long and short-term treatment regardless of holding period, and open positions are treated as closed at year end. None of that applies automatically anywhere else. If you trade futures seriously, the rules of your own jurisdiction are worth an hour with an accountant rather than an afternoon on forums.

Who gold futures are actually for

Gold futures are the cleanest available exposure to the gold price: deep liquidity, transparent pricing, central clearing, no storage, and the ability to go short as easily as long. For a hedger with a real exposure to protect, or a trader with enough capital to respect position sizing on a 100-ounce contract, they are hard to beat.

They are a poor choice for someone attracted mainly by the leverage. The same mechanism that lets a small deposit control 460,000 dollars of metal will close the account on a move that a spot trader would barely notice, and the daily margin cycle enforces that outcome mechanically. The realistic route in is the micro contract, position sizes calculated from volatility rather than from ambition, and a clear understanding that the roll has a cost even when you are right about the direction.

Gold itself is not going anywhere. The question is never whether the metal is worth exposure, but whether the instrument you have chosen matches the size of your account and the way you intend to hold it.
